A Love Letter to L.A.

Henrybuilt Los Angeles organized a group photography show and wildfire relief fundraiser to support communities affected by recent Los Angeles wildfires. The exhibition brought together personal and unique perspectives from architecture and design photographers, offering a view of Los Angeles’s beauty and resilience through their work. All proceeds from the event went to the LAFD Foundation and CCF Wildfire Recovery Fund.

Same Blue as the Sky

Henrybuilt sponsored the second edition of Same Blue as the Sky, a biennial exhibition held at Et al., a contemporary art gallery in San Francisco. Co-curated by Studio Ahead and Mariah Nielson, the show celebrated Northern California’s singular cultural heritage and the artists who inspire their studios. For this iteration, the initiative recognized the historic freedom and independence that artists have found in Northern California, but turned toward the shared experience of its densely populated and expressively-built cities.

New York Architecture + Design Book Club: Archigram 10

Head Hi, Brooklyn
The eighth New York Architecture + Design Book Club, co-organized by the Brooklyn bookstore Head Hi and Untapped, the independent design journal published by Henrybuilt, focused on “Archigram 10” (Circa Books). The latest publication from the British architecture collective Archigram—out 50 years after its last issue—the magazine makes clear how relevant, urgent, and vital the group’s zany approach to architecture remains. The program featured architects and book contributors Barry Wark and Winka Dubbeldam, who spoke with architect Michael Young about all things Archigram.

American Studio Craft trailblazers Wendy Maruyama and Tom Loeser shared their stories, joy, and wisdom in a talk led by Tiffany Jow, editor-in-chief of Untapped, the design journal published by Henrybuilt. The artists were in town to celebrate the launch of “Colorama,” a new exhibition at Superhouse that was on view through January 11. The conversation expanded on a story about Maruyama and Loeser’s views on the role of handcrafted objects in an increasingly digital world, featured in Untapped’s Print Edition 002.

Print Edition 002 Launch Party

Print Edition 002 of Untapped, the independent design journal published by Henrybuilt, made a grand entrance—on newsstands, online, and at the New York gallery and print studio A83, which is featured in the publication. Hundreds of guests took in A83’s current exhibition, “Architectural Drawing III,” and a spellbinding site-specific performance by Roderick George, Nicholas Ryan Gant, and Nouhoum Koita.

Please Touch: An Exhibition of Beautiful and Useful Objects, Presented by Fine Objects Society

Henrybuilt New York hosted the launch of Fine Objects Society, a community focused on the future of the decorative arts, and the opening of the group’s first exhibition, “Please Touch,” which presented exceptional historical objects for visitors to touch, pick up, and turn over.

The seventh iteration of the New York Architecture + Design Book Club, co-organized by the Brooklyn bookstore Head Hi and Untapped, the independent design journal published by Henrybuilt, zeroed in on the new book “American Modern: Architecture; Community; Columbus, Indiana” (Phiadon). The standing room only gathering featured the title’s author (and Columbus native) Matt Shaw and graphic designer Alex Lin, who spoke with landscape designer Sara Zewde about the process of putting it together.

On Location: Ideas Shaping Bay Area Design

Untapped, the independent design journal published by Henrybuilt, led a lively discussion about the key ideas shaping Bay Area design at San Francisco’s Center for Architecture + Design. The insights and experiences shared by furniture designer Kate Greenberg, interior and furniture designer Michael Hilal, architect Rudabeh Pakravan of Sidell Pakravan, and Homan Rajai of Studio Ahead sparked countless conversations at the reception that followed, signaling a growing, palpable energy that we look forward to seeing again soon.

Henrybuilt’s sister company Space Theory hosted a talk at its SoHo showroom during NYCxDesign about system-based approaches to design. Long present throughout Europe, this type of timeless, solution-oriented design systems have evolved into a backbone of the industry. Moderator Pei-Ru Keh wondered, “Now, can a number of pioneering American design studios seed a generation of systems-thinking?” Panelists included David Charne, co-founder of Fyrn; Joshua Itiola, designer and furniture design consultant at Vitsoe; and Virginie Remy, creative director of Space Theory.

In Tension: The Function of Body and Space

Hundreds turned out at the National Academy of Design to hear artists Torkwase Dyson and Sarah Oppenheimer talk about memory, time, boundaries, and more during “In Tension: The Function of Body and Space,” a conversation led by Untapped, the independent design journal published by Henrybuilt. The discussion marked the one-year anniversary of Untapped and the first in a series of public programs for “Sites of Impermanence” (through May 11), the Academy’s current exhibition of work by its 2023 Class of National Academicians: Dyson and Oppenheimer, as well as Alica Adams, Sanford Biggers, Willie Cole, Richard Gluckman, Carlos Jiménez, and Mel Kendrick.
